Regular readers of this blog have already learned about the delightful Mexican Organic Decaf (SWP) that we recently reviewed from Blue Spruce Decaf Coffee Company.  It was an amazing, refreshing decaffeinated coffee experience that we wholeheartedly recommend.

While many roasters would be content to stop with one outstanding decaffeinated coffee, the people at Blue Spruce Decaf wanted more.  They wanted to produce a series of outstanding decaffeinated coffees that decaf drinkers could enjoy.

After quickly making our way through our first pound of coffee from Blue Spruce Decaf, we were almost giddy with anticipation of another outstanding decaffeinated coffee experience.  The primary question for us was which decaf should we open next?  Would it be their Thai Organic Decaf?  Or should we go with their Organic Decaf Espresso?

This was a particularly tough choice for me since both were dark roasts that held a lot of promise.

So, how could we decide?  Easy.

Geography.

And the fact that neither of us have ever had a decaffeinated coffee from Thailand.

In fact – and this clearly demonstrates the learning process we’re undergoing regarding coffee – we hadn’t even considered looking for coffee from Thailand.  Sure, it lies within the general belt of coffee producing countries, but it’s not a place that we look to for our coffee.

At least not in the Midwest.

As I examined the package, I noted that this coffee comes from the Chiang Mai Province of Thailand, a region in the northwest part of the country.  And, unbeknownst to me, the city of Chiang Mai is rapidly emerging as a top coffee destination, home to a number of outstanding coffee shops and a burgeoning coffee scene.

Tearing open the package, we were greeted by another robust, beautiful batch of decaffeinated coffee beans.  Despite us holding the coffee for almost 2 weeks before opening, the dark, rich smell of coffee permeated our kitchen quickly after opening the bag.

After grinding the beans and brewing the coffee using our Hario v60, we were ready to sample this Thai Organic Decaf.  On first taste it was a strong, bold decaffeinated coffee that was rich, but featured a bit of a spicy aftertaste. The spiciness, though, did not overwhelm the flavor of the coffee.  Instead, it was a bit of a chocolatey flavor, a rich, strong aftertaste that added to the loveliness of this decaffeinated coffee.

But, that spiciness was to be expected given that this was a darker roast.  What was surprising was the smoothness of this roast.  Since it was labelled as a dark roast, I expected it to be strong.  But I didn’t expect anything this smooth.

Overall, I found this coffee to be another exquisite offering from Blue Spruce Decaf Coffee Co.  It’s an outstanding counterpoint to the Mexican Organic Decaf that we had previously, demonstrating that Blue Spruce Decaf is certainly striving to cater to all drinkers of decaffeinated coffee by providing a multitude of coffee experiences for their customers.

So, did greatness strike twice?

If you’re talking about great decaffeinated coffees from Blue Spruce Decaf Coffee Co., then the answer is a definite yes.

He said: This is another outstanding coffee from Calgary’s Blue Spruce Decaf Coffee Co.  It’s strong, rich, and bold – everything you’d want to have from a dark coffee roast.  However, there was a surprising smoothness to this coffee, also, which adds to the allure of it.  If you like strong, dark decaffeinated coffees, then this is a roast for you.  And while you’re at it, pick up their Mexican Organic Decaf – the two coffees are a great way to sample the possibilities of decaf coffee!
